Terms and Conditions Governing
Scholarship
Applicant must be 18 years of age or older and a member, in
good standing (including no outstanding dues or fees),
of the
AAWC at the time of the application and throughout the period
of scholarship use.
Applicant may apply for only one scholarship per
year.
Scholarship must be used within six months of
being awarded.
Exchange program must be concluded within six
months of assignment of the scholarship award.
Educational awards for accredited courses of study
in the field of wound care or related field must be entered within
six months or less from the time of awarding of the scholarship. Educational
programs that will be considered will be postgraduate in scope
with the applicant already possessing a degree in a field that
is qualified to render wound care. The scholarship committee
reserves the right under extenuating circumstances to disburse
monies after proper documentation/receipts are inspected.
Research programs requesting grant money will
submit a proposal outlining work to date and objectives of study. A
panel of wound care experts who are members of AAWC will review
this proposal. It is not expected or necessary for a research project
to be finished within the six month time period, but documentation
of progress within the project should be documented.
The award recipients in each of the three
areas of scholarship disbursement agrees to submit a minimum
250-word summary of their experience and further agrees to allow
the AAWC the right to publish this summary on its web site or
its Association Pages.
The scholarship committee reserves the right to
forego awarding any grant money if it is in the committee's opinion
that no applicant met the minimum criteria necessary to be considered
for an award.
FAQ'S
Is this scholarship benefit a gift or a loan; and how is its availability
going to be publicized?
This AAWC Scholarship Program is open to any member of the AAWC
in good standing who is 18 years of age or older. The Scholarship
Program funds given to members are gifts. The program will be publicized
at the AAWC website and within the AAWC Association Pages of AAWC's
official journals, Ostomy/Wound Management and WOUNDS and/or the
Association Newsletter. The Program will also be announced every
year at the AAWC Annual Membership Meeting during the Annual Symposium
on Advanced Wound Care, which is the annual date on which the Scholarship
Program launches. Scholarship materials can be downloaded from
the AAWC website (see below) or provided by the Business Office
by calling 866-AAWC-999 or 610-560-0484. A minimum 60-day notice
will be given regarding Scholarship Program opening dates and submission
deadlines.
If the organization has established several
categories of scholarship benefits, how is each kind of benefit
identified? How does the organization determine the recipients
of each category?
The AAWC Educational Grant - for those members
of the AAWC who wish to pursue academic study in the basic, clinical,
and/or behavioral science of wound management.
The AAWC
Research Grant - for those AAWC members who wish to
begin or continue investigation in the basic, clinical, and/or
behavioral science of wound management.
The AAWC
Exchange Program Grant - for the AAWC member wishing
to travel either nationally or internationally to spend time
observing and exchanging ideas on the delivery of wound care
at a host program.

or older.
-Have applied for only one total scholarship in
the calendar year.
-Educational Grant - must provide program name,
location, and summary of proposed course of study. Educational
institution must be accredited by an approved/recognized governing
body.
-Research Grant - provide an abbreviated literature

of this study will benefit the field of wound care.

Recipients of each category will be chosen by an independent volunteer
review panel of no more than five members of the AAWC, who will
be blinded as to author/applicant identity. The awards will
be based on both pertinence to the field of wound care and merit.
A list of names of recipients will be available from AAWC after
recipients are chosen to all who inquire.
Are, or will there be, any restrictions or limitations
in the selection procedure based upon race or the employment
status of the perspective recipient, or any relative of the perspective
recipient?
No restrictions will be placed on applicants based
on race or employment status. Members of the scholarship
review committee and their immediate relatives are ineligible to
apply for a grant while serving on the committee. At any
one time, the approximate number of eligible applicants includes
all AAWC members in good standing, excluding the scholarship review
committee and their relatives.
How many scholarship grants will be made
annually?
Ideally, at least three scholarships will be disbursed
annually, with at least one recipient in each of the three scholarship
categories. A total amount of $15,000 will be divided among all
winners, depending on the quality and quantity of the applications. The
scholarship committee reserves the right to forego the award of
any grant money if it is of the opinion that no applicant met the
minimum criteria necessary for such an award that calendar year.
How does the AAWC supervise the scholarship
awards or grants?
As previously noted, scholarship money may be
held for disbursement until proper documentation concerning course
of study, exchange site attendance confirmation, or research study
review is completed. See above for further details.
What procedures does the organization
have for taking action if the terms of the grant are violated?
Letter of censure to the individual offender,
as well as permanent expulsion from the AAWC with loss of dues.
If I win/have won a Scholarship, how do I expedite the
disbursement of my award?
As stated in the Terms and Conditions Governing Scholarship
section of the AAWC Scholarship Application, we reserve the right
to disburse moneys after proper documentation/receipts are received.
If or when you have completed your course of study and/or travel,
please forward your receipts and supporting documentation to
the AAWC Business Office at the address below to have your funds
dispersed. If you have been selected for a Research Scholarship,
please expect your award no later than March of the year after
your award was granted, and please be prepared to submit documentation
of the project if requested at any time. If the check should
be made out to the facility hosting the research, please call
the AAWC office at 866-AAWC-999 or 610-560-0484.
Other guidelines to remember:
· All moneys must be dispersed by the March date specified
at the top of this page.
· Exchange program/travel must be concluded within six months
of assignment of the scholarship award.
· Educational awards for accredited courses of study in
the field of wound care or related field must be entered within
six months or less from the time of awarding of the scholarship.
· Research winners are not expected to be finished a research
project within the six month time period after the award is made,
but documentation of progress within the project must be kept and
furnished when requested.
· Each award recipient in each of the three areas of scholarship
agrees to submit a minimum 250-word summary of his/her experience
and further agrees to allow the AAWC the right to publish this
summary on its web site or its Association Pages.
Is my award subject to federal and state income tax?
Please note that your award may be subject to federal
and state income tax. Please be sure to maintain copies of all
of your receipts and relevant documentation. We are including some
general guidelines for you, but it is your responsibility to consult
your tax advisor as to whether your award is taxable. We highly
suggest that you double check with your tax advisor concerning
your award. You may also wish to visit www.irs.gov to view Publication
520 on “Scholarships and Fellowships.”
The AAWC will comply with Internal Revenue Service guidelines
and report your award on a 1099 or W-2 where required. You may
not determine taxability based solely on the reporting of a 1099\W-2.
The AAWC accepts no responsibility in determining your individual
taxability.
Educational Grants
Recipients of the Educational Grant may be tax free if you are
a degree-seeking candidate (either undergraduate or graduate),
and the moneys are spent on tuition, fees and/or course related
expenses. It is strongly recommended that the AAWC write the check
directly to your educational institution, otherwise you will need
to provide proof on how the award was spent.
